BOX 662, Bellevue, WA 98009-0662<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>October 11, 2016<\/strong><br \/>\nThe meeting was held in Bristol Hall of St. Margaret&#8217;s Episcopal Church beginning at 12:00 noon.<br \/>\n<strong>WELCOME:<\/strong> The meeting was called to order and conducted by EISCC President Tony Copes.<br \/>\n<strong>OPENING PRAYER: <\/strong>Khizer Sheriff provided the opening prayer, Prayer of Renewal.<br \/>\n<strong>SELF-INTRODUCTIONS<\/strong> were made by 24 representatives and guests.<br \/>\n<strong>MINUTES<\/strong> of the September 13, 2016, meeting were approved as submitted.<br \/>\n<strong>ELECTION: <\/strong>The slate offered by the Nominating Committee was approved.\u00a0 Rev. Karen Studders was elected as Secretary, and Warren Marquardson was elected as Treasurer.\u00a0 Dick Jacke and Rev. J.C. Mitchell were elected as board members at large.\u00a0 Other board members remain the same.<br \/>\nThe new officers will be<br \/>\nPresident:\u00a0Tony Copes, finishing the second and final year of his term<br \/>\nVice President:\u00a0Linda Hillesheim<br \/>\nSecretary:\u00a0Karen Studders<br \/>\nTreasurer:\u00a0Warren Marquardson<\/p>\n<p><strong>PROGRAM: Access Opportunity Workshop\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Marnie Maraldo from the Eastside Human Services Forum (EHSF) put on this workshop, with the assistance of Karen Studders.\u00a0 These workshops are being offered to groups on the Eastside to explore ways in which our complex social problems (poverty, hunger, homelessness, etc.) might be addressed.\u00a0 To do this, they look for \u2018wicked questions\u2019 that cannot be resolved with known, traditional, analytical, linear approaches because there is incomplete or conflicting information, a variety of people and\/or opinions involved, there is a large economic burden, and problems are interconnected.\u00a0 With the collaboration of stakeholders, they hope to develop a shared understanding of the problems and shared commitments for solutions.\u00a0 With imagination and innovation, this could include pilot programs, prototypes, and \u2018good enough\u2019 solutions.<\/p>\n<p>We went through several exercises which listed a number of possible wicked questions and then selected those issues\/questions that were of most interest to our group.\u00a0 The results of the workshop exercises can be found in the attached file (along with results from other, similar workshops.\u00a0 EHSF is interested in putting on similar workshops for other community groups on the Eastside.\u00a0 If your group would be interested, please contact Marnie atmarnie@eastsideforum.org or <a href=\"tel:(425)%20220-3389\">425-220-3389<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The five wicked questions that we identified were:<\/p>\n<table width=\"704\">\n<tbody>\n<td width=\"704\">1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How is it that our local economy is so strong at a time when economic inequality &amp; homelessness is on the rise?<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How is it that we are working to help those who are homeless\/low-income with many\u00a0programs and we are having a difficult time finding a common connection to know what each other are doing to stop duplication or to work together more quickly?<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How do we acknowledge that we have homelessness on the Eastside and our funding is not from the Eastside and our values may be different from Seattle\/King County\/United Way?<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How do we allow members of our community that are sleeping in parks to find a temporary &#8220;home base&#8221; that works for them while assuring that our parks remain good wildlife habitats and welcoming to all members of our community?<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How can we allow the mentally ill to have the least restrictive and\u00a0simultaneously we are not able to provide help when a person is in obvious distress?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>REFRESHMENT COORDINATOR: <\/strong>Nadine Bentsen, Tony Copes, Farida Hakim, Sandy Lewis, and Betty Spohn provided the food for today\u2019s meeting.<br \/>\n<strong>REPORTS: <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Legislative Coordinator:\u00a0 <\/strong>Jean Harris reported that a Faith Action Network Candidates Forum was to be held on Sunday, October 16, from 3 to 5 pm at St. Margaret\u2019s Episcopal Church.\u00a0 The event will be held in the sanctuary rather than the social hall where we meet.\u00a0 Jean also noted that you can find FAN\u2019s initiative recommendations at their website <a href=\"http:\/\/fanwa.org\/2016-ballot-initiative-guide\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/fanwa.org\/2016-ballot-initiative-guide\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1480657164398000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEiQXsTA8k0crx82NYK5nm_sj8NCg\">http:\/\/fanwa.org\/2016-ballot-initiative-guide\/<\/a> .<\/p>\n<p><strong>ANNOUNCEMENTS:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Karen Studders <\/strong>reported that there will be a <strong>Soul Care for the City\u2019s Older People<\/strong> luncheon for professionals featuring <strong>Thomas Moore<\/strong> on his forthcoming book Aging with Soul at Trinity Parish, 609 8<sup>th<\/sup> Ave, Seattle, on Thursday, October 27, 2016, from <span data-term=\"goog_643003656\">11:30 am to 1:30 pm<\/span>.\u00a0 Q and A will follow the presentation.\u00a0 Lunch will be catered by FareStart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tiane Reid <\/strong>reported that MAPS will be hosting a <strong>Poverty Immersion Workshop<\/strong> on Saturday, November 12, from <span data-term=\"goog_643003657\">10 am to 2 pm<\/span>.\u00a0 For more information, visit the MAPS website at <a href=\"http:\/\/mcrcseattle.org\/?event=poverty-immersion-workshop\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/mcrcseattle.org\/?event%3Dpoverty-immersion-workshop&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1480657164398000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEtKaRVSV55vAh_j-F8hT3kRKtsIA\">http:\/\/mcrcseattle.org\/?event=poverty-immersion-workshop<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eliabeth Maupin <\/strong>provided information on the new <strong>Preston Food Bank<\/strong>, <strong>Tent City IV at High Point<\/strong>, and other items.\u00a0 See attachments.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, October 29, 2016, from 9 am to 4 pm, there will be a program on <strong>Islam in the Public Square<\/strong> held in Seattle at Town Hall, 1119 8<sup>th<\/sup> Ave.\u00a0 Tickets are $15 and include lunch.
